CHAPTER VI
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
“What you resist persists.”
Carl Jung
It is interesting to know how this process originated. The modern Ho'oponopono technique comes from, or is a derivative of, one of the most precious legacies we have received from ancient cultures around the world: it is the application of the ancient Kahuna philosophy of shamanic healing practices of the ancient priests who inspired and guided the way of life of Native Hawaiians, who embodied, perhaps like no one before or since, a model of civilization based on a friendly and peaceful coexistence, with effective conflict resolution through love. They understood this as an extension of individual responsibility toward all life contained in the environment, without exception, and as an entirely clear, practical, and everyday exercise.
Ho'oponopono is an ancient practice of Hawaii and is defined as "mental cleansing." It consisted of family meetings in which relationships were set right through prayer, discussion, confession, repentance, mutual restitution and forgiveness. Although the word " Ho'oponopono " was not originally used, the first historians of Hawaii and the Polynesian cultures documented the belief that sickness was caused by breaking the Kapu or spiritual laws, and that the disease could not be cured until the victim paid for the transgression. Often the family would ask for the assistance of a priest (Kahuna Pule) or healing priest (Kahuna Lapa'au). It was believed that the mistakes of a person caused the disease and angered the gods.
Some families used to gather daily or weekly, to prevent problems. They thought that sickness was caused by stress due to anger, guilt, recrimination and lack of forgiveness. When a child of any of the family fell ill, the grandmother usually asked the parents, “What have you done?” They believed that healing could only come with the full forgiveness of the entire family, which had to meet to work on the causes and sources of the problem, and so correct the error and restore good relations between all family members and their gods.
Usually, the oldest member was the person in charge of gathering the whole family. The therapy against the sickness consisted of procuring the confession. The patient or a family member had to confess. If no one confessed the error, the patient could die. It was believed that secrecy gave power to the disease. When the error was admitted, it had no power over the individual.
The process begins with prayer. A statement of the problem is made, and the transgression discussed, without holding on to the fault. Family members are expected to work problems through and cooperate. “One or more periods of silence may be taken for reflection on the entanglement of emotions and injuries. Everyone’s feelings are acknowledged. Then confession, repentance and forgiveness take place. Everyone releases (kala) each other, letting go. They cut off the past (ʻoki), and together they close the event with a ceremonial feast, called pani, which often included eating limu kala or kala seaweed, freedom symbol.” [26]
In 1976, Morrnah Simeona adapted the traditional Ho'oponopono process of mutual forgiveness of the family to the social realities of the modern era.
